Hi Chris, with regards to absolute & relative error. Is it an accepted practice to always choose the larger error? Is this the algorithm employed in modern test sets to decide on an assessment of any test result?

If you are using rule-of-thumb evaluations, yes.

If you are trying to match manufacturer specifications, you will have to match the manufacturer. For example: SEL usually add the absolute and percent specifications and GE usually specifies whichever is greater.

Don’t forget to include the test-set specifications in your calculations if you are trying to mimic the manufacturers.

Also remember to add the contact closing time for timing tests if it is not included in the specifications. For example: SEL specs typically don’t include the contact closing time. GE relay typically do include contact closing time.
