How to Test Protective Elements

Welcome to the seventh lesson in our online seminar about relay testing. We’re going to do what most people consider to be relay testing in this lesson, but we’re going to show you a whole bunch of different options for how to do your element testing. Hopefully, when you finish this lesson you will never re-program a relay just to get a number on a test sheet ever again. That’s my goal!

I want to be clear from the outset that this is a generic lesson. Even though we’re testing an overcurrent relay, we’re going to be glossing over a lot of the details of overcurrent protection because the goal here is to not teach you how to test overcurrent relays, but to show you all of the possible techniques that you can apply to any element in any relay.

If you think that we’ve glossed over something and you want the answer, you can always go to The Relay Testing Handbook, and look for your answer there, or there will be an online seminar about that element in the future sometime.

If you skipped the introduction videos, you will need to watch the introduction videos for this topic before you will be issued a certificate.
